The DCI Science Standard
Professional hair color education has a long history of presenting professional opinion and commercial claims with the same confidence as peer-reviewed science. DCI refuses that conflation. Every statement in every DCI volume carries one of four classification labels.
Classification Standards
When a claim moves from S2 to S1 — because research confirms it — the DCI edition is updated and the change is noted. Standards are not permanent; evidence is.
During bleaching, eumelanin granules (black-brown) oxidize before phaeomelanin (red-yellow). This is why warm underlying tones appear predictably during lightening — and why the sequence from black through red-orange to yellow is consistent across all clients regardless of natural color.
Professional Implication
The underlying pigment warmth map is not a guideline. It is the predictable result of melanin chemistry. Every pre-lightening decision is built on understanding this sequence.

Repeated oxidative chemical processing permanently converts disulfide bonds (cystine) to cysteic acid. This conversion is irreversible. No conditioning treatment, bond builder, or product can restore structural integrity lost this way.
Professional Implication
Every bleach application is a debit from a finite structural account. Bond builders reduce the depletion — they do not eliminate it. The professional is responsible for tracking the cumulative total.

An ash toner applied to a Level 7 or 8 canvas does not produce a close-but-not-quite ash result. It produces a grey, drab, or greenish result — because the ash pigment is insufficient to neutralize the residual orange-gold at that canvas level. The canvas requirement is a prerequisite, not a preference.
Professional Implication
Every formula entry in the DCI library carries an explicit canvas level. It is not adjustable by adding more toner or waiting longer.

Grey hair contains no pigment. It is not white-pigmented — it is pigment-free. The common professional claim that 'grey hair is resistant to color' is imprecise. Grey hair may have a more compact cuticle in some clients, requiring a protocol adjustment. But resistance is not a universal property of grey hair.
Professional Implication
The correct professional response to grey coverage is client-specific assessment, not a blanket protocol. Cuticle state and elasticity are assessed; a grey-hair default is not applied.
